What technologies does the delivery robot use to recognize roads?

2025-09-12

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology

SLAM technology is the core of Autonomous navigation fordelivery robots. By moving in an unknown environment, the robot uses sensor data to both build an environmental map and determine its own position. Modern SLAM algorithms employ graph optimization methods, representing pose and landmark points as nodes and observation data as edges. Nonlinear optimization techniques are then used to solve for the maximum posterior probability estimate.

In practical applications, Delivery Robots typically employ a combination of an a priori map and real-time map construction. The robot pre-stores a highly accurate map of the work area. During operation, it uses a scanning matching algorithm to align the real-time sensor data with the a priori map, thereby achieving precise positioning. Additionally, the robot dynamically updates the map, recording temporary obstacles and changes in the environment.

Multi-sensor fusion perception system

Modern delivery robots utilize multi-sensor fusion technology to create a comprehensive perception of their surroundings. As the core sensor, LiDAR emits laser beams and calculates the time it takes for them to return, generating a highly accurate three-dimensional point cloud map of the environment. This allows the robot to detect the precise location and shape of obstacles. Meanwhile, visual sensors provide rich texture and color information, assisting the robot in identifying traffic signs, pedestrians, and other dynamic objects.

Millimeter wave radar performs exceptionally well in harsh weather conditions, being able to penetrate through rain and fog and reliably detecting obstacles at a distance. Ultrasonic sensors, on the other hand, are suitable for close-range detection and play a significant role, especially during low-speed driving and obstacle avoidance. Through algorithms such as Kalman filtering and Bayesian estimation, the robot is able to align and fuse the data from these heterogeneous sensors in both space and time, creating a unified environmental perception model.

Environment understanding driven by deep learning

The goal detection algorithm based on deep learning enables delivery robots to identify and classify various elements in their environment. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are capable of extracting features from images and recognizing pedestrians, vehicles, traffic signs, and other critical objects. Semantic segmentation technology further classifies each pixel in the image, distinguishing between areas such as roads, sidewalks, lawns, and other areas that are or are not suitable for traversal.

The behavior prediction algorithm analyzes the motion trajectories of pedestrians and vehicles to predict their future movement paths within a few seconds, providing crucial input for the decision-making and planning of robots. Recursive neural networks and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) have shown excellent performance in this field, as they are capable of modeling the movement patterns of dynamic objects.

Path planning and motion control

On the basis of accurately perceiving the environment, the delivery robot needs to plan a safe and efficient route. The global path planner calculates the optimal route from the starting point to the destination based on the known map information, often using algorithms such as A*, D*, or Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT). The local path planner, on the other hand, is responsible for real-time obstacle avoidance, considering the movement trends of dynamic obstacles and generating a smooth and safe trajectory.

Model predictive control (MPC) algorithms are widely used in the motion control of robots. This algorithm predicts the behavior of the system over a certain period of time, optimizes the control inputs, and enables the robot to smoothly follow the planned path while also responding promptly to changes in the environment.

Cloud-based collaboration and continuous learning

The modern delivery robot system employs a cloud-based collaborative architecture. The operational data of individual robots is uploaded to the cloud platform, where it is analyzed using big data to optimize algorithm parameters. The cloud system can integrate the experiences of multiple robots, enabling knowledge sharing and collaborative learning. When a robot encounters a scenario that is difficult to handle, it can request cloud-based assistance for decision-making or remote human intervention.

The continuous learning mechanism enables the delivery robot to adapt to changes in its environment. Through online learning algorithms, the robot can continuously adjust its model parameters based on new data, thereby gradually improving its performance in specific environments. Transfer learning technology allows a model trained in a simulated environment to be quickly adapted to the real world, significantly reducing training costs and time.

Technical Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite significant advancements in the environmental perception technology of delivery robots, numerous challenges remain. Extreme weather conditions, complex dynamic environments, and sensor failures are still potential factors that could affect the robot's performance. Future research will focus on enhancing the robustness and reliability of the system, developing more advanced multimodal fusion algorithms, and creating fault recovery mechanisms.

With the development of new technologies such as 5G communication, edge computing, and quantum sensing, the perception capabilities of delivery robots will be further enhanced. Higher precision sensors, more powerful computing platforms, and smarter algorithms will enable delivery robots to operate reliably in more complex environments, providing crucial technical support for the construction of smart cities.

The road recognition technology of the delivery robot is an integrated innovation of various cutting-edge technologies. Its development has not only propelled the progress of the service robot industry but also provided valuable technical accumulation and practical experience for the broader field of autonomous driving. With continuous improvement in technology, delivery robots will play an increasingly important role in urban life.
